Champagne Vazart-Coquart RM, Chouilly
Jean-Pierre Vazart has 11ha, all of it in Chouilly on the Côte des Blancs. All of his wines are therefore Blancs de Blancs ‘Grand Cru Chouilly’. He is obsessive about quality and recently commissioned a brand-new winery. He is the third biggest land-holder in Chouilly, although some way behind Moët and Louis Roederer! His wines are made completely in stainless steel, for ‘purity’ as he says. His yields are modest and his viticulture as sustainable as possible. He was one of the first to gain the near-organic status of ‘HVE’ (high level environmental controls) and the estate is now in conversion to full organic status. The resulting wines are particularly persistent, complex and mineral, pure Chouilly Blanc de Blancs. Part of the secret is his ‘solera’ blend of reserve wines begun by his father in 1982. Even so, it was a vintage Grand Bouquet 2012 which won a Silver Medal at the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, repeated, he has just heard, for the 2013 in 2019! A member of Champagne ‘Special Club’ and the ‘Les Mains du Terroir’ grouping. Now regularly receiving top rating from the international wine critics, high on the radar of champagne connoisseurs and watch out for his new, limited, first ever wine fermented in a terracotta ‘egg’.
