Heimann & Fiai

The Heimann Family is one of the pioneering red wine makers of Hungary. The style of the Heimann family’s classic wines was developed by Ágnes and Zoltán Heimann. The first decade of the 21st century was dedicated to finding the special Heimann style when the brought top quality cuttings of Cabernet Franc and Merlot from Bordeaux and planted them on the Porkoláb-völgy plateau. In 2002, the first monopole vineyard of the family, the 11 ha Bati Kereszt was planted with significant acreage dedicated to Viognier, the one and only white variety of the estate. The west facing slopes were planted with Tannat from the Basque Country and Sagrantino from Umbria. These latter varieties give an individual touch to the character of the top of the range wines: Franciscus and Barbár. The family’s goal is to produce wines that display full ripeness and refreshing fruit, using top quality, estate grown fruit and using sustainable viticultural practises to maintain the diversity of the different vineyards. Key to the style and quality of the wines is use of whole bunch and gentle manual punch downs during fermentation to ensure a slow and long aromatic extraction. Ageing in large used oak barrels or amphorae and with low sulphur levels at bottling are also the trademark of both the Heimann Family wines and the newer Heimann & Fiai wines. There are three members of the Heimann Family working in the winery: Ágnes, Zoltán Sr. and Zoltán Jr. For me, the style of wines can be characterised by elegance, purity of fruit and a sense of place about them. The younger wines will benefit from having some time to open up before serving and these are wines that will age beautifully in the cellar. I for one look forward to tasting their evolution over the coming years.

In more recent years, Zoltan Jr (or ‘Kadarka Man’ as he likes to call himself), has produced a new collection of wines, that express the microclimate of his homeland in the southern Hungarian town of Szekszárd where delicate Kadarka and spicy Kékfrankos provide him with the best material. After completing years of studying and training in Germany, France, Italy and Australia, Zoltan Jr realised that the only way to put his wines on the world map was by exploring the potential of the local varieties. And with the delicate elegance of Kadarka and the explosive fruit and spiciness of Kékfrankos, he fell in love with his quest and has created a range of single varietal wines that express what the Szekszard region means to him. These are well defined wines with a vibrancy and charm that will compliment any gastronomic experience.
